I grew up playing lacrosse. I love this sport! I started
playing when I was in 7th grade. At that time it was still a fairly
new sport in Utah. I continued to play through high school, and even played one
year at Utah Valley University before my mission. That year UVU had a great
team, and we even went to the national championship for Division II lacrosse.
When I got home from my mission I was debating whether or not I would continue
playing. By this time I had switched schools, and was now attending BYU. For
those of you who don’t know, BYU has one of the most elite lacrosse programs in
the nation. I went to a few practices with the team, and went to the first few
days of tryouts, but then came to find out the harsh reality that it costs
$2,400 to play at the Y. I had just gotten home from my mission, and
unfortunately had no money to spare. I decided to bag it this year, and told
myself I would work out like crazy, and try to pick it up again next season if
I had the money. Soon after that I found myself playing with UVU again. Their
program had collapsed due to a series of events, and in consequence is not able
this year to compete in the league. So it turned out that there was no
requirement to play other than to pay a hundred bucks, and show up when you
can. That was definitely doable for me. Because we had lost all sponsorship
from the school, we started playing under the name Happy Valley Lacrosse, and
have just been practicing and scrimmaging a few smaller schools like Weber
State, Utah State, and the UVU alumni. It’s been great for me because I can
keep up on the fundamentals, and stay in shape, until next fall when I’ll be
trying out for BYU. Let’s play!
