When I was a sophomore in high school, I decided I wanted to
learn to play the guitar. This was mainly due to the fact that my best friend
Korey had started playing, and we really wanted to make music together. So I
started plucking out some notes on my dad’s old Ovation guitar, and watched a
bunch of YouTube videos, trying to teach myself. It wasn’t long before I knew a
few simple chords, and within a couple months I was writing my own songs. The
songs I have written have always been rather simple. I’m not the most elite
guitarist ever, and so I stick to a few rather basic chord patterns. For me,
songwriting has been more about the lyrics, than the music. That might be a
little unorthodox, but in my eyes it’s a form of poetry. I truly believe that
that is where my passion for writing originated. Writing songs, or any form of
writing in general, is like a bunch of puzzle pieces in my head, and it just
takes some time to process those thoughts, organize them, and lay them out in a
cohesive order. It may be difficult during the process, but once it’s complete
and you’re able to see the beautiful picture, the whole project instantly
becomes worth the time and effort.
